Maurice Colbert VFW Interview 2012 (Snippet)
Q: So, what got you into writing?
A: Man…where do I start? I guess I would have to say college.
A: Yes! I did both my Bachelors and Masters in Homeland Security and Emergency Management and they where writing intensive.
Q: Really? How so?
A: Well, I had to write a lot papers and over the course of ten years, the writing part came easy.
Q: Ten years!
A: Yes (laughing)…ten arduous years.
Q; Why so long?
A: Hmm (smiling)…deployments, raising a family… I took one course a semester, you do the math. Oh, and I took a year off to relax my brain.
Q: Wow, that’s a long time, but I see it’s paid off.
A: Well the jury is still out on that one (chuckling)!
Q; So how did you go from Army, full-time husband and father, to writer?
A: As I said, writing all those papers helped to find myself as a writer. Everything else is just part of our life course, I guess.
Q: How so?
A : Well, you have to brainstorm and research your topics, organize your thoughts you know. The first time I had to write a term paper, it took two me a month to write 25 pages. Now I can do that in a day or two. The hard part was balancing my obligations as a husband and father. I was either away for Uncle Sam or studying something in my free time. I had to consciously plan my activities with the family.
Q: I see. You write in a self-help genre, why?
A: It’s easy for me…
A: Well, my years spent in the military and climbing through the ranks taught me how to mentor and encourage people. I guess it was natural for me to gravitate towards that in my writing.
Q: So, is that your niche?
A: For now, but I will expand into other areas. I’d like to write some fiction, and an autobiography.
Q: I am sure you would do well if you pursued that.
A: I think so, but for now I want to hone my skills and build an audience and see where it goes.
Q: I have no doubt you will reach your goals.
A: Thank you, I hope I do.
