Many writers new to self-publishing can write a great book, but they do not now how to promote an ebook. It’s been two weeks since I’ve published my ebooks on Amazon’s Kindle KDP, eagerly awaiting the results of my free promotion campaign. Since launching my campaign, I have come to learn that writing your book, creating a keyword optimized title, and designing a great cover are just half the battle when it comes to self-publishing. Despite the self-publishing boon that has taken pace over the last decade, one aspect of writing a book still remains…promoting your ebook!
Ebook promotion is probably the last thing that aspiring writers even think about (I know I didn’t!) when plunging into to the online ebook craze. For many, the focus is on how to make money with ebooks, but that same amount of desire and effort goes into writing an ebook also requires the same when it comes to marketing an ebook. Now you can find any number of ebook marketing services that exist online, but buyer beware. Many of these sights entice you with FREE book promotion, but to get the premium benefits you have to sign up for the paid offers that they offer you as an upsell.
Here are some of the things I have done so far when it comes to the subject of how to promote an ebook:
Use Amazon’s promotion tools
Many new authors don’t realize it, but Amazon offers a number of tools to promote your ebook. They range from free book promotions to merchandising programs. All you have to do is set up your KDP Select account and these features will be made available.
Become an EbookStage Author Affiliate
I stumble upon this while searching YouTube. EbookStage has an affiliate program that lets you set up a promotion in conjunction with your Amazon free promotion schedule or after. The way it works is you sign up as an affiliate author and they allow you to promote your book(s) for free. In return you get an affiliate link to post on your blog or social media network to get people to join as members (authors or readers). You earn points depending on how many people sign up through your link. These signups translate to points that you can use to run free promotions for your book(s).
Set up an author website
This is probably one of the most underutilize methods that new and seasoned authors do not take advantage of. The main reason you are reading this is because you found my site and decided to peruse the content that I have. I freely admit that I am using this as a vehicle to grow my readership base. The challenge for me is to post frequent, interesting, and relevant content for readers of my books and to attract new ones while promoting my books at the same time.
Join writer forums and participate
Once again, an underutilized method that is not used. I joined WritersDigest and eBookFriends as part of my strategy to help build my readership base. How you ask? Easy! When you join a forum you establish a profile. Here you can provide the links to you webpage or books, so when you post that link will show up as part of your signature. But do me a favor, DO NOT SPAM!!! These forums are setup to exchange ideas and contribute relevant information. It’s not like it was 5-10 years ago where you could place B.S. comments and get a link back to you.
Take advantage of social media
If you haven’t been paying attention, social media is where it’s at! All the bug name businesses have a social media presence. They have leveraged ‘word-of-mouth’ to market their products and gain more sales. Why not do the same? I was initially apprehensive about using social media, but I took advantage and have established my presence online.
These 5 tips on how to promote an ebook are certainly not definitive in any way. They are however, a cost effective way to promote and market your books without going broke or chasing the latest internet marketing fad. Folks I am finding that slow and steady wins this race, I think you will to.
